Excel Serie A 2024-2025 Italian Football Championship
Serie A is the top-tier professional football league in Italy and one of the most prestigious football competitions in the world. Established in 1898, the league took its current round-robin format in the 1929-30 season and has since been home to some of the greatest clubs, players, and rivalries in football history. Serie A is governed by the Lega Serie A and operates under the supervision of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), adhering to UEFA regulations.
Competition Format
Serie A consists of 20 teams that compete over a 38-match season, with each club playing the other teams twice—once at home and once away. Matches are typically played from August to May, with a winter break in December or January. The league operates on a points system, awarding three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned champion and awarded the Scudetto (Italian for “small shield”), a symbol of victory worn on the winning club’s shirts for the following season.
The top four teams in Serie A qualify directly for the UEFA Champions League group stage, while the fifth-placed team and the Coppa Italia winner earn a spot in the UEFA Europa League. The team finishing sixth may qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League, depending on domestic cup results. The bottom three teams are relegated to Serie B, the second division, and are replaced by the top three teams from that competition.
Historical Dominance and Clubs
Serie A has long been dominated by a handful of elite clubs, with Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan being the most successful teams in the league’s history. Collectively known as the “Tre grandi” (The Big Three), these clubs have won the majority of league titles. Juventus holds the record for the most league championships, followed by Inter and AC Milan.
Other historic clubs such as AS Roma, Lazio, Napoli, and Fiorentina have also experienced periods of success, with Napoli gaining prominence in the late 1980s under the leadership of the legendary Diego Maradona. More recently, clubs like Atalanta and Sassuolo have made significant progress, challenging the traditional powerhouses.

Iconic Players and Managers
Serie A has been home to some of football’s greatest players, including Diego Maradona (Napoli), Paolo Maldini (AC Milan), Francesco Totti (Roma), Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Roberto Baggio, and more. The league has also been a proving ground for world-class managers such as Arrigo Sacchi, Fabio Capello, Marcello Lippi, Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Conte, and José Mourinho.
Tactical Influence and Playing Style
Serie A has historically been known for its emphasis on tactical discipline, strong defensive setups, and strategic play, often characterized by the famous Catenaccio system, which emphasizes a well-organized defense and counter-attacking football. In recent years, the league has evolved to include more dynamic and attacking styles, influenced by modern tactical approaches from managers across Europe.
Rivalries and Derbies
Italian football is famous for its fierce rivalries, with some of the most intense matches in the world taking place in Serie A.
-
Derby della Madonnina (Inter Milan vs. AC Milan) – A battle between the two Milanese giants, played at the iconic San Siro.
-
Derby d’Italia (Juventus vs. Inter Milan) – A historic rivalry between Italy’s most successful and historically influential clubs.
-
Derby della Capitale (Roma vs. Lazio) – One of the fiercest and most passionate city derbies in football.
-

Recent Developments
In recent years, Serie A has experienced a resurgence in popularity, with more competitive title races and improved financial stability. The return of top players, investment in new stadiums, and the growing influence of international ownership have helped the league regain its reputation as one of the best in Europe.
Serie A remains a league that blends tradition with modern football, offering a mix of elite teams, passionate fan culture, and some of the world’s most exciting talents. Whether through historic rivalries, tactical innovations, or legendary players, the Italian top flight continues to be a cornerstone of world football.
